Rest your head and shoulder on the mat.
Hold for 30 seconds to 1 minute, then switch sides.
This opens up the shoulders and upper back.

Neck Tension – How to Get Relief And Why Neck Tension Can Happen To You

Neck tension is all too common and all of us experience it from time to time. It’s a “pain-in-the-neck” and nobody likes it. But, why does it happen and how can we take the initiative to help ourselves to resolve it? These are questions that we’ll investigate in this blog and find out some answers that will guide you to reduce your pain!

Neck pain is in or around the spine beneath your head. That part of your neck is also known as the cervical spine. Neck pain is a common symptom of many different injuries and medical conditions.You might have axial neck pain (felt mostly in your neck) or radicular neck pain (pain that shoots into other areas, such as your shoulders or arms). It can be acute (lasting for days) or chronic (lasting longer than three months).

Neck pain can interfere with your daily activities and reduce your quality of life if it’s not treated effectively. Fortunately, most causes of neck pain aren’t serious and improve with conservative treatments, like therapeutic massage, exercise and stress management. Pain management is a last resort that may involve medical substances to treat the symptoms instead of the causes.

Massage For Neck Tension

Neck tension is THE most common thing I see in my business of therapeutic bodywork. The particular style of bodywork I do is called orthopedic massage – it’s a way to evaluate physical dysfunction in the body as well as acute and chronic pain. Here’s a link to explain the comprehensive method I do

Part of orthopedic massage includes a technique that is not used very often by massage therapists. It’s called Muscle Energy Technique [MET]. MET connects the brain to the body to calm the nervous system, relax muscles that are stressed out or overly tight and can even “re-connect” parts of the body that the brain has deemed “secondary.” How does that work? [see the next paragraph]

The brain can sometimes give a 2nd priority to parts of the body – this is mostly due to a traumatic event that’s happened to the body. It can make you feel a bit less coordinated or even have less feeling in that area of your body! I’ve seen this when a client has been through trauma in their body. What I Do

A bit more about what I do. When a person comes to me with either an injury or with an imbalance somewhere in their body, I 1st do an assessment of what’s going on. Then, with that knowledge, I can use certain orthopedic tests to narrow down the real issues and then eliminate certain conditions that may appear to be the problem but actually aren’t.

With all that information, I can then start to treat the person. Usually, that involves relieving their discomfort or pain that compromises their life. A session or 2 to reduce the pain is the 1st step and then, it’s kinda amazing but the deeper problem will show up. So, I start to treat that issue and eventually the real problem will emerge! It can take a while to uncover all this but it’s so rewarding for the client when it does!

Strategies I Use For Bodywork

For neck tension. I use several massage techniques to ease any complications. Usually, neck tension commonly results from overuse, stress or an injury. But, how to deal with different complications? If you have neck pain that is acute [just happened recently and is more than a minor pain], massage has to be gentle so it doesn’t get worse. MET is perfect in this case – see above under “Massage for Neck Tension” – the 2nd paragraph

If you have chronic neck stress or pain, the technique is to slowly “unwind” your neck stress. That means taking the time to “unpeel the onion.” I don’t go too deep at the beginning because the outer layers may be too tight to let go. One-step-at-a-time is the strategy. I believe that this particular strategy is ultimately more effective by allowing the body to adjust to the changes and integrate those corrections.

Massage for Whiplash – What Is Whiplash and How Can Massage Help?

Whiplash is a neck injury that occurs when the neck is forced to move suddenly and rapidly in one direction and then back again. This can stretch or sprain the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissues of the neck. We’ll look at massage for whiplash later in this blog post. First, let’s talk about at what causes whiplash.

Whiplash can be caused by a number of things, most commonly a car accident, especially a rear-end collision. But other possibilities are from a fall you had, a sports injury [particularly a contact sport], riding a roller coaster, or even from physical abuse [if this is the case, report the incident to the authorities!].

Symptoms – Can Massage For Whiplash Help?

Massage for whiplash can DEF help!!  But, let’s look at how you feel and how effective massage can be. Your symptoms may include:

1] neck pain or stiffness

2] shoulder pain

3] dizziness

4] low back pain

5] arm or hand pain or numbness

6] sleepiness

7] tiredness

8] general irritability.

These are all possible symptoms after you have had a whiplash event with your neck.      So, how does whiplash actually affect your body?

How Does Whiplash Affect Your Body?

Whiplash happens because of how a law of physics [the law of inertia] affects the human body. Think about what it’s like to be in a moving car when the driver suddenly steps on the brakes. Inertia is why your body keeps moving forward even though the car is stopping. Whiplash happens when inertia causes your head, neck, and body to move at different speeds. That forces your neck to compress or extend too quickly!

Temporary Relief of Whiplash Pain

Ice is the 1st line of defense because it will reduce the swelling AS WELL AS decrease your pain! Whiplash can be quite painful. In the 1st 24-48 hours, if your healthcare provider suggests, you might consider taking anti-inflammatory medicines – but It’s essential to follow your healthcare provider’s recommendations regarding medication use, including dosage and duration, to manage whiplash symptoms.

It’s also very important to minimize the movement of your neck and any other areas in pain. That’s kinda obvious but it’s important – you have to rest the injured areas in order for them to start to recover and heal! Using a neck brace will help a lot! Remember that massage for whiplash is a great way to help! How? Well, 1st of all, massage just simply is relaxing – that is really important especially initially! When muscles from a whiplash accident get strained, stretched or injured, relaxation is super important – for the recovery of the muscles. That will DEF help you get better quickly!

Long-Term Effects Of Whiplash

Many people who have whiplash after a car crash or sports injury feel better within a few days or weeks and don’t have any lasting effects from the injury. However, some continue to have pain and other symptoms for several months or even years after the initial injury. Anywhere between 50% to 90% of patients are known to have some degree of persistent symptoms. Massage for whiplash can help in this case!

In addition, most whiplash recoveries occur within three months after the injury. Without treatment, patients show minimal improvement after that period. The long-term effects of whiplash include:

1] Chronic pain and stiffness in the neck and shoulders

7] Depression and anxiety

Because of the neck’s delicate nature, body workers should always proceed with knowledge and caution with a whiplash injury. A healthcare provider should always be consulted to determine if there is a fracture, concussion, or other disc problem before attempting any bodywork.

Headaches come from many different sources. They are a very common condition that most people have, albeit intermittently. The main symptom of a headache is pain in the head or face. There are several types of headaches, and tension headaches are the most common. In this blog article I’ll go over the types of headaches, causes of headaches, and massage for stress headaches.

Headaches are the most common form of pain and are a major reason cited for days missed at work or school, as well as visits to healthcare providers. While most headaches aren’t dangerous, certain types can be a sign of a serious underlying condition [near the end].

What Are the Types of Headaches [the ones that massage for stress headaches can help]?

There are more than 150 types of headaches. They fall into two main categories: primary and secondary headaches. We’ll just look at the most common types and more specifically about massage for stress headaches – these are the ones that we can help ourselves reduce. Why? Massages help because we usually create the main reason these headaches exist!

Primary Headaches

These headaches are caused by the dysfunction [or over-activity] of pain-sensitive features in your head. They’re NOT a symptom of or caused by an underlying medical condition. Some people may have genes that make them more likely to develop primary headaches. Types of primary headaches include stress headaches, migraines, cluster and “new daily persistent headaches” [NDPH].

Some primary headaches can be triggered by lifestyle factors or situations, including alcohol, processed foods that contain nitrates, and nicotine, lack of sleep, skipped meals, physical straining like coughing [even excessive laughing!], and poor posture. Secondary Headaches

An underlying medical condition causes secondary headaches. They’re considered a symptom or sign of a condition. These types of secondary headaches aren’t necessarily dangerous and are usually resolved once the underlying condition is treated – they include dehydration, sinus or even medication overuse. But there are secondary headaches that can be a sign of a serious or potentially life-threatening condition, they include:

Spinal headaches
Spinal headaches are intense headaches that occur when spinal fluid leaks out of the membrane covering your spinal cord, usually after a spinal tap.

Thunderclap headaches
A thunderclap headache is an extremely painful headache that comes on suddenly, like a clap of thunder. This type of headache reaches its most intense pain within one minute and lasts at least five minutes.

How Can You Deal with A Headache?

One of the best ways to deal with a headache is to get a massage for stress headaches!

What is The Main Cause of a Headache?

Headache pain results from signals interacting between your brain, your blood vessels, and the surrounding nerves. During a headache, multiple mechanisms activate specific nerves that affect muscles and blood vessels. These nerves send pain signals to your brain, causing a headache. It’s really the brain that’s in control!!

Some of the more common triggers for headaches are lifestyle-related, such as poor diet, stress, muscle tension, and lack of exercise. It’s up to you to take a step in the direction of relieving these triggers. Serious underlying disorders, such as brain tumors, are rarely the cause of headaches, although persistent headaches should always be investigated by your healthcare professional.

Are Headaches Hereditary?

Headaches tend to run in families, especially migraines. Children who have migraines usually have at least one biological parent who also experiences them. In fact, kids whose parents have migraines are up to four times more likely to develop them.
Headaches can also be triggered by environmental factors shared in a family’s household, such as:

1] Eating certain foods or ingredients, like caffeine, alcohol, fermented foods, chocolate and cheese.
2] Exposure to allergens.
3] Secondhand smoke.
4] Strong odors from household chemicals or perfumes.
5] Environmental factors can definitely have an effect. It’s worth investigating these issues!

What Headache Symptoms Require Immediate Medical Care?

If you or your child has any of the following headache symptoms, get medical care right away:
1] a sudden, new, and severe headache.
2] a headache with a fever, shortness of breath, stiff neck, or rash.
3] a headache that occurs after a head injury or accident.
4] getting a new type of headache after age 55.

Also seek medical care right away if your headache is associated with neurological symptoms, such as: weakness, dizziness, sudden loss of balance or falling, numbness or tingling, paralysis, speech difficulties, mental confusion, seizures, or vision changes (blurry vision, double vision or blind spots).

Luckily, at the beginning of a headache, you can start to deal with it yourself! Relax, take some time to yourself, stay hydrated, and know that it’s likely a tension headache.
